Folktone and Hunique have a motto that could soon become official: Nothing is impossible – just re-arrange and find a solution. If there’s no táncház, there will be a Folk Pub and Quiz. If there are no “Dukes”, then a “George” will do just fine. And if trains don’t move... the show is still on! Here’s what happened: Bence and I set off from Szeged towards the airport, hoping to catch our flight to London for the gig – but on our way to Budapest, our train broke down. Shock, waiting, and then the painful realization: we missed our flight. And then came the miracle: Toni Rudolf (aka ToniRudi), despite all his pleads not to, jumped in to play the viola – and saved the evening! Huge thanks and gratitude to him and everyone who rallied together and made the night happen. On top of this, another important shift was taking place: the London ensemble has a new leadership, and perhaps the evening was a small celebration of this new beginning. Thank you: – Ádám Rőmer and Lóró – the strength of the Rőmer family – Kata Kreinicker and the Hunique Dance Ensemble – Toni Rudolf and Gojko Alilović – the Rock&Rollers of the Hungarian folk dance movement in Transylvania, Hungary, and the UK – To everyone who was with us, helped, clapped, or/and smiled. This night wasn’t just unforgettable but also brought new energy to the team. Folk forever – on land, air and tracks (if we really must).
To celebrate Farsang – the Hungarian carnival season – we had the pleasure of visiting two wonderful communities once again: the Hungarian School in Woking and the Hungarian School in Cambridge. It’s always a joy to return to these places, surrounded by professional teams, outstanding teachers, welcoming parents, and talented children. This weekend was no different – full of music, dance, smiles, and a warm, festive spirit. We’re truly grateful to be part of this vibrant, value-driven educational community – as musicians, dancers, guests, and friends. Thank you for having us! We were deeply honoured to join the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert performance on 5 February 2025 – with the Rőmer family and Folktone Productions bringing folk music and dance to this world-class stage. It was an absolute joy to perform in such a beautiful space, for such an attentive and open-hearted audience. Bringing folk traditions into conversation with classical settings like this creates truly special moments – and this evening was no exception. Things are changing here – seriously. Brussels feels more familiar than ever. We watched a girl step off the escalator, spot a piece of rubbish, and casually pick it up – just because that’s what people do here. We mentioned this at dance practice, and they just nodded. “That’s normal here. That’s why it’s cleaner.” We almost felt embarrassed… if they’d let us. Meanwhile, the Viola dancers are now performing a repertoire so rich, even dance groups in Hungary would be impressed. Ferenc Robinek is fitter than ever, giving Borbála Máté the space to plan ahead with confidence and creativity. There were date-based coconut balls, a bronze peeing boy, and beer brewed from malt and juniper berries – but most importantly, there was a gathering rooted in friendship. Friendship that transcends branding, ego, and pretense. The word “gratitude” may be getting overused around here – but honestly, we mean it every time. Thank you to: – the Liszt Institute Brussels and Csaba Bartos – for their inspiring presence – the Hungarian Scouts – for tech support and logistics – and of course the entire Viola·Dance·Ensemble – especially Bori and Feri – for … where to start…where to end…Thanks for the endless everything.
Last Saturday, we celebrated the 5th anniversary of the DunAvon Dance Ensemble. More than just a milestone, it was a reflection of the journey we’ve shared – full of rehearsals, performances, friendship, laughter and learning. I still remember that very first coffee meeting with Dia Szeidler-Lednitzky, when we started to dream up what this could become. Just a few weeks later, with the arrival of Andrea Szabó and the joining of Gábor Mihály Horváth, the group was born – then known as the Bristol Hungarian Folk Dance Ensemble. Since then, as DunAvon, we’ve grown together, performed together, and created something meaningful and lasting. And at the very end of our anniversary gala night, when the audience gave us a long and heartfelt round of applause – it all came rushing back. The memories. The work. The joy. I was completely swept up in the moment. My eyes filled with tears. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for the full house. To our families and friends – Thank you for your ongoing support, your help behind the scenes, and your encouragement not just at this gala, but over the entire past five years. Dear DunAvon – Thank you for your perseverance, your humility, your dedication, and your ever-growing passion. I truly hope we’ll stay together for many more years to come.
The collaboration between Folktone Productions and the London folk dance community goes back to December 2013 – over a decade of shared music, movement and memories. Since then, Folktone has played at most of London’s táncház gatherings, but this night was something special. On 18 January 2025, we returned to a buzzing, joyful dancefloor at the Chiswick Catholic Centre, thanks to the tireless work of the Hunique Dance Ensemble and the Hungarian Culture & Heritage Society (HCHS). Children filled the space from 4pm, and by 7pm, the adults had taken over – and danced late into the evening. The live music was brought to you by the Folktone dream team: 🎻 Bence Vörösmarty and Ádám Rőmer – violin 🎼 János Kállai – cimbalom 🎻 Tamás Ferencz – viola 🥁 Gojko Alilović – double bass & percussion Dance instruction was led by the ever-energetic Dave Hartvik Gresa, and we owe a huge thanks to Kata Kreinicker for bringing everyone together once again with her excellent organisation and unstoppable spirit. We were overjoyed to reconnect with old friends like Boldizsár Acsai (sound), István Olivér Fátyol (HCHS president), Zsolt Gyurka (food & drinks magician), Gergely and Krisztina Paládi-Kovács, and Emese, who helped fill the dancefloor with joy and style. A night of music, dance, community and Hungarian tradition – with just a touch of pálinka to keep things warm. 🥂
